Human Sequencer

The description in english is below.

Human Sequencer

This audio game is an interactive installation for collective musical creation. The challenge is to create together as a group interesting rhythmic patterns in a giant sequencer controlled with the visitors' feet on the floor. The music is generated with voices singing the scat, a vocal jazz improvisation technique using nonsense words. This work proposes to the anonymous passers to create transitory interactions by collaboration and laughter.

Social collaboration

This audio game is suited for creating rhythmic pattern through collaboration rather than through personal interactivity or competition. We can observe the emergence of natural leaders that play the role of conductors. These people often have a deeper understanding of music in general and a natural leadership. Other people will want to simply play with sounds by themselves or even want to lie down on the musical mat. This also leads to interesting social interactions. Transitory relationships between the people last about a few minutes while they are playing with the audio game.

Musical approaches

This work is an exploration of the usual musical sequencer, but controlled by the feet of the visitors.

Here are some of the strategies that are explored in this work :

This is the main idea of the interactive device. The sounds must be short and distinct. The focus is not put on the notes, but rahter on the percussive attribute of each sound. Very important is the visual hint about where is the playhead on carpet, reading the visitors feet positions.

Some zones on the carpet might have hidden sounds that are triggered when you step on them. The vistors can explore them and use them as a way of expression using rhythms. The instant reaction gives more satisfactions to the interactors, but also involve fewer collaboration between the participants.

2d piano

Some musicians might want to create melodic patterns with their feet. Different scale such as the pentatonic and major scales can be used. In the first and second versions, I was using chords progessions, but this will no more be the case in the third version, since it was harder to find out what was interactive and what was not.

The sound might follow the participants position. The effect is simple, but often much appreciated.

Petit historique
